I'm an old fart so have lots of experience trying to sharpen my own blades. Honing stones? Been there, and while you can get excellent results with various stones, I do not possess the patience to master that art and I'm lazy. Next I tried a 3-slot manual sharpener like you find in a hardware store but the resulting keenness was only so-so.This Presto unit just arrived so I got out my cleaver, chef's knives, paring knives and even my father's old pocket knife. The results have been uniformly fantastic. Now I need to warn people using my kitchen that my knives are damn near surgically sharp!Tips: Use a light touch and smoothly draw the blade through while angled tight against the guide. You can do this best by eye-balling the sharpener and blade from directly above. Any steel "dust" created during sharpening can be easily cleaned up by wrapping a magnet in a tissue and passing this over any accumulation. Don't want that stuff in your food. As a final step, because I'm particular, I ran my freshly sharpened blades through the final "finishing" slot on my manual sharpener.Don't tell my neighbours I have a Presto please...

I use this on all our kitchen knives. Very efficient. You have to remember to consistently draw the blade towards you (about 1 second) with minimal pressure, letting the grinding stones do all the work, and being careful to use the guides. This takes patience, but becomes a routine practice pretty quickly, and you are rewarded with very sharp blades. Just remember when you are finished to carefully wipe the surfaces of the unit and the tabletop you placed it on with a damp paper towel to remove all filing dust. I recently cut a top sirloin roast for Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and my sharpened knife easily cut very, very thin slices with almost no effort. Takes very up little room stored in our pantry.

Having the 3 guides available for ending up with a finely-honed knife is great! And this producr delivers a super sharp cutting edge every time. Plus - it's easy to maintain that sharp edge afterwards. I previously used a wetstone to sharpen my knives - but they never got to the sharpness level this machine delivers. Not even close. And this sharpener is quick; it takes less than 2 minutes to complete a carving knife. The Amazon price is also great - inexpensive really for what this item provides.Stay away from those cheaper 1 or 2 slotted versions of this sharpener - buy this one. Can't go wrong!!!!!

Sturdy and easy to use. Stays in place and has two modes. Medium grind to fully sharpen and restore old heavily worn knives as well as a fine grind for daily honing. I've tried many devices but this is the best.

So it does a decent job sharpening knives, BUT the "plastic guides" that dictate what angle your knives cut at (depending on the thickness of the knives) is pretty garbage. They don't hold in place well and they're fairly unbalanced, so you get a REALLY bad angle.However! It's does sharpen noticeably when you compare it to a super dull knife, so it's great for cheap knives, but I definitely wouldn't use it on high end chefs knives or anything of the sort.

I had some high end knives and ran it through the machine as per the instructions. Some were pretty damaged beforehand so the course wheel did the trick. The final wheel was just okay... one side was good but the other side looked like it wanted a chef's knife to be a bread knife. Would I recommend this sharpener? Yes, if your standards are low. No, if you want to have a precision blade.I gravitated towards a wet stone after this purchase. If you invest in good knives, buy a wet stone and learn how to use it. If you want good sharpness (but not great) this appliance works.

If you like to cook you know the value of a sharp knief.You have probably spent good money on your knives...this unit is an investment but well worth it...it is easy to use just be patient and focus on the guided angles. Does a great job and knives are rejuvenated in little or no time.

I have some of those manual, pull through sharpeners and they get the knife sharp but it does not hold the edge.If you look at the edge you see horizontal grooves on the edge due to the V-notch the knife is pulled through. The very top of the edge is thin and thus does not hold the edge.This device uses wheels. Stage 1 takes about 2 passes on each side. This is the starter edge. Stage 2 begins to produces a true edge, and it takes about 2 or 3 passes on each side. Stage 3 is a fine wheel that hones the edge. A good magnifying lens will show it is not absolutely polished but WOW, is the knife ever sharp. I'll leave it like this and see how long the edge holds up. I know I could always take a ceramic to the edge and really polish it. I prefer to see how well this stands up with no additional tweaking.The good old paper cut test is nearly as easy to do as a fresh razor knife.I'm impressed and do not hesitate to recommend this. I did not give any marks for sheerness simply because I have no idea what it is.So rather than buying an Asian knife with a 14 degree edge that will be hard to get back, I now have all my decent knives sharp as I desire and I can easily return the edge any time I wish.Update:Well disappointment has struck. Initially the fine wheel for honing vibrated a bit. The other wheels are smooth. Well, after doing about 7 knives the fine wheel (#3) chatters and the knife almost jumps around. It seems the fine wheel is disintegrating.Either I got a defective or damaged unit, or the fine wheel is poorly designed. Note I am quite sure I have not used it wrongly by applying too much pressure. By the time it gets to the fine wheel I figured that almost no pressure was necessary as its job is to polish and that never works with pressure.If the company will contact me with a plan to fix this I will wait before doing a return.

I love this product! Previously I had a knife sharpener that worked by hand and I could never get my knives to be sharp for more than a day or two. I use my knives very often to cook dinner for my family and having a sharpener that actually works is very helpful. It’s easy to use and worth your money.

Sharpener works great and is easy to use. Would recommend it to everyone. Sharpened all my knives in about 1/2 and hour. ( Kitchen knives, Hunting knives, Fishing Knives, Paring knives ) all sharpened easily big or small and were razor sharp. It will not work on knives with cerated blades but works great on all straight Blade Knives of any size.

Ok price, sharp blades, pretty easy to use, but a steady hand, even pressure, and consitan speed is required. It would be better if the blade thickness selector was more solid. Don't rely on it as a physical guide/ just use a visual guide.

Pour aiguiser la majorité de mes longs couteaux, sans mettre de pression sur lame, le moteur ne suffit pas à la tâche et arrête, créant ainsi une brèche dans la lame. Le moteur n'est pas assez puissant pour les couteaux plus lourds. Je ne recommande pas ce produit.

Il faut considérer cet appareil comme un outil. Il faut apprendre à le connaitre, être patient. Dans les premiers essais pas trop de succès mais plus on travaille avec, plus on s'en sert, on s'aperçoit que la qualité de l'appareil est très bonne.
